When constructing a yoga mat from PVC, plasticizers must be used to make the material pliable, so it can become soft, and be useful as a yoga mat. Standard PVC mats use phthalates as plasticizers, these chemicals can be toxic to the environment, and to your body. We at YogaRat strive to make products that are as kind to the environment, and to our customers, as possible. A standard PVC mat may have a little bit more ÒstickinessÓ than a nontoxic mat, but we believe this is more than outweighed by the potential negative impact of phthalates and heavy metals used in manufacturing. They can also have a much stronger odor upon first opening and unrolling. Nontoxic mats can also have an odor after first opening. If it occurs, it is due to the mats being shrink wrapped after production and some gasses being trapped, and it is an issue that any other mats of the same type can have. If your mat has an odor after opening, please give it some time to air out, as it will dissipate. Our mats are manufactured in Taiwan, the country where this type of mat was invented, and where the highest quality factories for producing them are located.
